EFSA has scientifically evaluated several generic weight management claims from the article 13.1 CLA dossier. However specific claims related to CLA, like reduction of body fat have not been included. Instead the EFSA has kept a focus on weight loss, while CLA is well known to reduce body fat and increase lean body mass, which results in an improved body composition.

We consider the fact that EFSA did not evaluate the scientific opinion on the relation between CLA and reduction of body fat, as an invitation to Lipid Nutrition to present this specific benefit and health claims in a specific article 13.5 dossier”, says Jaap Kluifhooft, Director Regulatory Affairs, Lipid Nutrition. “We have learned from the process and are very confident to receive a positive opinion via article 13.5”
